THEME: WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT THE GOOD NEWS OF CHRIST

Greetings beloved people of God. I welcome you to "My Catholic Homily Digest". As we celebrate the memorial of St. Catherine of Alexandria today, I want to reflect with us on the theme " What is Good about the Good News of Christ". Beloved, how do you feel when some one calls you to say that they have a good news for you? I believe that most of us would be excited and eager to hear what the content of the good news is all about, especially if we have been through lots of misfortunes in the recent past. Beloved, according to the dictionary of theology, a good news is something pleasant, fortunate or otherwise positive. However, in the Judeo-Christian understanding, the Good News is the vivifying  message of Jesus Christ concerning the salvation of the entire world. The Good News of Christ is meant to bring mercy to sinners, joy to the sorrowful, hope to the forlorn, health to the sick, liberation to the captive, freedom to those comdemned, and strength to the weak and fainthearted.

But beloved, we know from the various warnings of Jesus in the Scriptures, and even from lived experiences, that many Christians who have believed in the Good News of Christ are yet to experience some of these goodness of the Good News. Some even ask: If the Gospel message is good news, then why do so many people treat Christians with contempt and hostility for their beliefs and practices? Why did Jesus warn his followers that they will be confronted with wickedness, false teaching, persecution, sickness, hardship to the point of renouncig the Good News. However, we must note that the real enemy that has embittered the Good News is the devil, who has sworn to oppose God and frustrate all His good plans for the human race. Child of God, asking why does suffering and the cross come with accepting the Good News is like asking why is there evil in the good world created by God (Gen. 1:25).

Hear me child of God, instead of sorrowing, asking and looking for what is good about the Good News of Christ, you need to learn the true antidotes for this maleficience in the Good News. The answer is Jesus' response in the face of sickness, hardship, hostility and persecution which is Love, forbearance, and forgiveness. Listen, it is only through that love which is rooted in God's great compassion that we can stand a chance to overcome prejudice, hatred, and suffering that comes with receiving the Good News. Thus, the good news of the Good News of Christ is that it is  made for the whole world because it is God's eternal word of truth, love, pardon, and salvation, through his Son, Jesus Christ. That is why the Good News has power to set us free from all our sins, fears, sickness, hardship,  death, and bring peace, forgiveness and new life in God to all who will remain faithful to the Gospel till the end. God bless you
