 THEME: SANCTIFIED FAMILY TIES

Greetings beloved people of God. I welcome you to "My Catholic Homily Digest". I wish to reflect with you today on the theme, "Sanctified Family Ties". It is often said that consanguine family tie is the strongest bond that can exist between humans, hence the phrase 'blood is thicker than water'. However, in today's Gospel reading, Jesus revolutionised this old order of consanguine ties and made our spiritual adoption as children of God through baptism, the strongest and unbreakable tie.

Beloved, through the merit of the Pascal mystery, God has made us His adopted children. That is why Jesus told his disciples and all us today through the Gospel that, "Whoever believes in Him and does the will of God is a child of God and a member of His family, His sons and daughters and heirs to the heavenly treasures. Thus adopted and redeemed, we must reject earthly fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters, if these constitute obstacles to our divine filiation (Luke 14:26). This was why Lucian of Antioch (240-312 AD), an early Christian martyr once said that, "a Christian's true relatives are the saints". Namely those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and adopted, those who have been baptized into Jesus Christ and who live according to the will and commandments of God.

Beloved, our very own beloved Archbishop Albert Kanene Obiefuna, of Blessed memory once stated that, "The waters of baptism is thicker that the blood of filiation". So, far from preaching disregard for one's biological family, Jesus meant to use the opportunity provided in today's Gospel to teach us a spiritual lesson and truth about the kingdom of God and to point out a higher level of relationships, namely our relationship with God and with those who belong to God's family. God bless you

Oh that today you would listen to his voice harden not your hearts (Ps.95:7-8)

LET US PRAY : Lord Jesus, you are the source of all true friendship and love. In all my relationships, may your love be my constant guide for choosing what is good and for rejecting what is contrary to your will....Amen
